RES GIP
Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education
This pilot study on Women's Health Issues was commissioned by the Warragul Neighbourhood House and undertaken by a research team of four. We took it up because of our shared interest in the topic, and the suspected need for greater public awareness. We also felt it was an important subject that lacked a corresponding amount of concern particularly when it became apparent that there were very few similar studies available.

As well as data being a major theme, how young people are educated in schools is analysed and suggestions made for its improvement. Thirdly, the way clinical services are caring for young people is investigated. Recommendations include that there is an audit of what is taught currently, of teachers' knowledge in teaching in the area, and setting minimum standards. Also suggests there is an audit of clinical services available state wide.

WOMEN AND MEDIA
RES NAT
National Working Party on the Portrayal of Women in the Media
For the first time, this booklet presents important new evidence on the imbalance of the portrayal of women in the media. In 1993, Media Insight conducted a survey of national, state, local and regional newspapers as well as news and current affairs programs of the major television networks on behalf of the National Working Party. Gender factors were analysed and it is now clear that the portrayal of women is out of step with changes in women's lifestyle and economic power. Plus video and kit

RES STD
HILLER, Lynne; Deborah Warr; Ben Haste; Centre for the study of sexually transmissible diseases
Research Report 1996. The primary aim of this study was to gather baseline information on the sexual knowledge attitudes and behaviours of rural young people, with particular regard to the barriers to safer sexual practices which they may face. Further, given that individual factors alone may account for only part of the safer sex equation, the aim was to gather information about the context of sexual encounters and barriers to safer sex, including access to services and condoms, and the constructions of masculinity, femininity and heterosexuality which are dominant in the cultures of these young people and how these constructions may impinge on young people's ability to negotiate safety into their sexual practices.
