COPING WITH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION
PND BAR
BARNETT, Dr Bryanne
Depression affects nearly half of all mothers of young children in Australia. Anything which occurs as often as postnatal depression cannot be a disease - not even a social one. Possibly half of all mothers suffer at some time from depression - a distressing condition far too often unrecognised and untreated. The myth has it that new mothers bloom. But it is more likely that they are chronically tired, anxious about a demanding role for which they have no training, and perhaps depressed.

POSTNATAL DEPRESSION
PND COX
COX, John L
A guide for health professionals. Major mental disorder arising shortly after childbirth has intrigued psychiatrists (and their predecessors) for many years - indeed as far back as the days of Hippocrates. Debates about whether 'postpartum psychosis' is a specific entity have been stimulating, and while it is now widely accepted that these are the same sorts of mental disorders as develop at other times, there are enough special features to excite continuing speculation. Still more interesting, though, is the clear evidence that childbirth is a mighty precipitating factor in those who are genetically and constitutionally predisposed to major mental illnes. We are very much clearer about what happens than why, and out powers of prevention are as yet puny.

DEPRESSION AFTER CHILDBIRTH
PND DAL
DALTON, Katharina
How to recognize and treat postnatal illness. Postnatal depression can have devastating effects on a mother, her baby, her whole family, and her future. It is, however, often misunderstood both by the medical profession and by the general public. Drawing on many case histories from her own controversial but dramatically successful work, Dr Dalton attacks the popular idea that postnatal depression is caused by a combination of sleeplessness, lack of outside contact, and loss of independence, and argues that a cure will be achieved only when it is recognized for what it is - a hormonal change that occurs in a woman's body after childbirth.

ONE IN TEN
PND PAN
A look at postnatal depression. Postnatal depression (PND) affects one in ten new mothers and can be a very traumatic experience for them and their families. Many women with PND struggle for months without knowing what is wrong. They often blame themselves, their partners or the baby for not feeling the way they expected to feel. Typically, symptoms are hidden. Women pretend to 'cope' because they are ashamed to ask for help. The purpose of this video, designed for use in antenatal classes, is to alert expectant couples to the early symptoms of PND and to appropriate avenues to help.
